Mass Defense is a technical defeat for a mass shooter. This is a distributed system combining computer vision, SMS messaging and mobile apps.
The goal is to save innocent lives!
What is the problem? Any person can enter a facility and start shooting people. There is no ban on assault weapons or large capacity magazines. Out politicians can’t agree on a solution. The US government can’t agree on a gun ban. The problem is world wide, however much media coverage in the United Sates.
Let’s first identify the system levels. With each level the technical difficulty also increases. The early system testing has focused on the fist two levels.
Level 1. Detect.
The room camera is fed into an image detection. Each frame is analyses for three types of weapons: rifle, pistol or knife. If a weapon is detected, then a detection event is sent to all examiners. An examiner is tasked with examining all events. All false positives are ignored.
Level 2. Alert.
If an examiner identifies the event as a real mass shooter threat, then an alert is sent to all responders. An SMS text message is sent. The text message link will open the responder app to the event and school. A responder can be school administrator, teacher, emergency response, police, national emergency center.
Level 3. Annoy.
This level is meant to annoy the shooter. We do this on two types of interruption: audio and drone swarm. Each camera and drone has two way audio. The police can talk directly to the shooter. Audio can be used to ask the shooter to drop the weapon. The shooter is informed the police are on their way. The drone swarm will hover around the head of the shooter, just outside of reach. The drone can pump audio at the shooter to annoy. The drone swarm will follow the shooter. One or more drone houses will be kept on the premises. Drone charging is enabled at each house.
Level 4. Engage.
This level is meant to physically take the weapon away from the shooter. One or more humanoid robots are housed at the facility. The robot when activated, will take the weapon from the shooter.
The Company – Soul Shield.
The Mass Defense project is organized as a non-profit company. The objective is to advance weapon detection and mass shooter technology and make available to commercial companies. The project is funded through both government and non-government grants.
